Falle says. He was not ready to divulge the names of the roughly dozen payroll organizations that have signed up. However, he predicts, "By the end of this year, we will probably be close to 50 in a brand new channel that doesn't know who we are." Avalara is offering single-state pricing, which he says benefits even very small customers in one state.

Avalara has begun a program to enlist payroll providers to sell its sales-and-use-tax software. This is in addition to programs to sign middle-market accounting software VARs and programs operated through vendors such as Sage North American. The payroll companies view sales tax issues as "an extension of compliance," says Pat Falle, SVP of sales for the Bainbridge Island, Wash.-vendor.
