RANDOM THOUGHTS: Desi and Lucy

Lucy and DesiSang in the chorus of the Mozart opera “La Clemenza di Tito” a week ago and it triggered the creative juices in me. I am writing the opera “I Love Lucy.” In the opening recitative, Ricky Ricardo (Desi) sings “Lucy, I’m Home”, followed by his plaintive aria “Who Wears the Pants in This Family?”  Later, Lucy rhapsodizes, "Alas, I have created confusion. Who shall save me?" while the chorus, led by singers playing neighbors, Fred and Ethel, sing, "It's a mess, mess, mess. It's a mess."

… Waiting to take off to Sao Paolo, Brazil this week, I was asked if I was flying Economy Plus. “I don’t know; I usually fly Economy Minus.” “Economy Minus?”  “Yeah, it’s a bit like a roach motel with padded seats.” However, on the return trip to Newark I was upgraded to Economy Plus, which was accompanied by the appropriate ceremony with the flight attendants waving palm leaves and singing hosannas. … The flight out produced some interesting experiences. I pointed to this soft lumpy thing in my seat and asked another passenger “What is that?” “It’s a pillow.” “You know, I’ve heard about them, but I’ve never actually seen one.” …  Took about 20 minutes to figure out the controls – how to call the flight attendant and turn on the light. Along with movie and game controls, they are now touch screen on the display in back of the seat in front. Touch screen sounds great until you trying playing “Bejeweled 2” for an hour. “Are you winning?” my seat mate asked. “No, but my heart rate hit the aerobic level from having my hands and arms out in front of me for so long.” I tried the chess game, but I was exhausted in 40 moves. … Saw a lot of people on the street in the Morumbi district who were waving their arms and, in general, asking strange. “What do you call those people?” I asked a passer-by. “Brazil nuts,” he responded. … But immigration getting back into the United States is getting too complicated. After I handed him my passport and customs declaration, the immigration officer demanded, “Now stand on your right leg, pat your stomach and rub the top of your head.”
