MICROSOFT SORTING OUT DCO CONFUSION

Microsoft managed to make an existing element of its product licensing a hot topic at Convergence as apparently unintended results had ISVs fuming. The change involves a $195 charge per user under the Dynamics Client for Office, which is imposed when any product "touches" the Dynamics database. But what caused this probably routine move to become a major topic was that products that connect through e-Connect were included in the DCO requirement, which ISVs said meant they would have to pay the charge for all users in the installed base.
Most believe it will be unlikely the alteration will stand in its current form and it was reported Microsoft has told some there will be another statement on this subject at this summer's Worldwide Partner Conference. One said that policy contrasted with the SQL Server Group, whose pricing he said was aimed at encouraging more users to sign up for the same price. When I explained his position that two Microsoft units were at odds with each other, some other ISVs responded "So what else is new?" Whether or not the ISV concern is merited, the scale of the buzz ought to cause Microsoft to do some talking with its partners. In researching the subject via the Web, I found some VARs were showing tiered pricing, starting at $195 per user and declining with volume, so I'm not sure if the situation is as dire as some said.
