MICROSOFT OUTLINES MASTER VAR PLAN

dynamics logoMicrosoft today outlined its plan for Master VARs that will be created as an umbrella for smaller resellers that might otherwise be driven from the business by new requirements. While 10 organizations are reportedly interested in achieving Master VAR status, none are approved. Microsoft stated only that an announcement would be made soon.

MICROSOFT MASTER VAR DETAILS NEXT WEEK

Jeff EdwardsMicrosoft plans to release the details of its Master VAR program next week. The vendor has confirmed the announcement is being made to the channel on September 27, but has officially released no other information about the plan. The Master VAR plan is aimed at providing a way to shelter smaller resellers that might otherwise be driven from the field by the new Microsoft reseller program that raises requirements and squeezes margins for the smaller fry.  Read more...

OPEN SYSTEMS NAMES TOP VAR

Kalibur Solutions has been named as the top reseller of Open Systems software products for the year ended Aug. 31, 2011. The company was recognized this month at the company’s Partners in Profit Conference. Kalibur, based in Brampton, Ontario, is owned by founder Zoltan Szakal. According to Open Systems VP Paul Lundquist, this was the first time a Canadian reseller has won the vendor's top award. Kalibur sells both Traverse and Open Systems Accounting Software.

SAGE READIES ISV PAYMENT PROGRAM

Sage logoSage North America is getting ready to roll out a program that enables ISVs with on-premise or web-based applications to accept integrated payments via Sage Payment Solutions.  “We expect this to be big for ISVs, whether the ISV is a Sage partner, or not,” says Julie Herman, VP of business development for Sage Payment Solutions. "Sage Payment Solutions can offer them a payment platform offering an entire suite of payments solutions, from credit card and check processing, to mobile payments, loyalty and gift cards.” T Read more...

PRONTO NAMES RETAIL MANAGER

Pronto Software, an Australian ERP developer, has appointed Stephen Duncan as retail and CRM manager. Duncan, who has more than 15 years of experience in retail and IT, is responsible for overseeing the retail product lifecycle of Pronto XI. Pronto has recruited a handful of resellers in the United States and Canada to handle the financial application.

SAGE BITES BULLET IN HEALTHCARE SALE

Guy BerruyerSage decided to cut its losses this week as it announced the sale of the Sage Software Healthcare. The English parent of Sage North America is selling the American unit to a private equity group for about 31 percent less than the price it paid for the former Emdeon Practice Services in 2006 and it appears that the revenue of the unit being sold is as much as 27 percent less in dollars than for the organization acquired five years ago. Sage is selling the healthcare operations to Vista Equity Partners for 205 million pounds, down from the 297 million pounds it paid originally.

SAP RECRUITING STILL SLOW

SAP logoSometimes, there’s no news like no news and SAP hasn’t been making much noise with Business By Design since its channel conference in Savannah, Ga., in late February.

ByD, of course, is the online system that is supposed to be one of the keys to SAP’s future in financial software. But the pace at which the company’s channel is growing doesn’t show much promise for having this product take off anytime soon. XERO INITIATIVE CONTINUES

Rod DruryKeep an eye on Xero, the New Zealand-based company that markets an online accounting application. As mentioned in a prior newsletter even though this is nominally a low-end package, Jim Bourke, principal of WithumSmith-Brown, says it can compete effectively further upstream. Next month, Jamie Sutherland, who formerly ran Sage’s Simply Accounting efforts, is scheduled to take over as managing director for the United States. Meanwhile, CEO Rod Drury continues his American buzz building and is speaking at the Sleeter Group’s conference in Las Vegas in early November. Also, the company recently completed a significant upgrade to its hosting architecture, which it said represents a major step in the scaling of Xero’s database platform and a faster underlying storage layer.

SAGE: ECONOMIC PESSIMISM BUT ...

A survey of more than 10,000 businesses by the Sage Group found that there is a decline in confidence in global and local economic conditions. But the poll, taken across much of the world including North America, showed that many businesses are cautiously optimistic about the prospects for their own operations and that the performance of most businesses held steady or improved over the last six months.
